Homeschooling & Socialization

What if your children aren't properly socialized?

When people find out we are a homeschooling family, the number one question we hear is "How do they get socialized?"

Socialization is about learning to live in a community. If you homeschool well, your children might be better socialized than most public school graduates. It's funny that I never hear anyone ask a parent of public schooled kids if their kids are properly socialized. They might be asking the wrong parents about socialization.

In public school, kids are divided into classrooms of kids that are the same age, usually from the same neighborhood. They are in this setting for many hours a day. They aren't with their families, they aren't spending time with different aged people, or with people from different socioeconomic classes, and oftentimes classrooms aren't racially diverse. How on earth did we as a culture come to the conclusion that being in a grade bubble is proper socialization?

Homeschooled kids are in a family setting, they attend homeschool events where kids play together no matter what age they are, and they play with friends from all over their region. Homeschoolers can be involved in art classes, sports, scouts, learning center classes, church groups, and any other classes that interest them. In a homeschool setting kids are out in the world during the day while their public-school counterparts are stuck in their grade bubble.

If you are considering homeschooling, please don’t let the fear of the lack of socialization stop you from homeschooling. Socialization is up to you!
